CPM to CPC in ChatGPT Ads: why you have to clone — and how it takes one click
You launched a CPM campaign, reach looks fine — but now you'd rather pay for clicks than impressions? ChatGPT Ads has no switch for that: a campaign's bidding type is immutable after creation (the API rejects changes). The official path is a copy — and that copy now takes one click.
Quick recap: CPM, CPC, CPA
- CPM (impressions): you pay per 1,000 views — for awareness and reach.
- CPC (clicks): you only pay when someone clicks — for traffic with predictable cost per visit.
- CPA (conversions): the auction optimizes toward a conversion event — requires tracking.
CPM to CPC is the most common switch: once a campaign is supposed to prove it drives visitors rather than just being seen, CPC is the more honest billing model.
“Clone as CPC” in Chatvertise
On the detail page of any CPM (or CPA) campaign you'll now find “Clone as CPC”. One click creates a complete, paused copy with click bidding — and unlike the same-named feature in the OpenAI Ads Manager, Chatvertise copies the full structure: every ad group (billing event switched to “click” automatically) and every ad including copy, images and target URLs. Budget, targeting and schedule carry over too.
One thing to review: the bids
CPM max bids are per 1,000 impressions, CPC bids per click — the same amount means something entirely different. That's why Chatvertise always creates the copy paused: open the copy's ad groups, set realistic click bids, then activate. Our free budget & ROAS calculator helps derive a target CPC from conversion rate and order value.
The original keeps running in the meantime — you can test both variants in parallel and pause the weaker one later. The API limitation becomes a clean A/B test.
