Reactivating archived ads in ChatGPT Ads: the archive is not a final state
“Archive” sounds final, and the OpenAI Ads Manager has no button that brings an archived ad back. Still, the archive in ChatGPT Ads is not a final state: an archived ad can be paused via the API, and with that it's back, in status “paused”. We verified this against the real account after our own mishap with 20 ads. This article explains the three statuses, their transitions and how to undo an archive.
Three statuses, four transitions
Three statuses, four transitions
- Active
- PauseActivate
- Paused
- ArchivePause (brings the ad back)
- Archived
Out of the archive always goes via “Paused”; there is no direct way to “Active”. Verified for ads.
- Active: the ad may serve, provided review, ad group, campaign and account allow it.
- Paused: the ad doesn't serve but keeps all its data. This is the status in which Chatvertise creates every new ad.
- Archived: the ad doesn't serve and is meant for tidying up. It is kept with all its fields; in Chatvertise you find it via the status filter.
The fourth transition is the one nobody expects: pause also works on an archived ad and sets it to “paused”. There is no direct way from “archived” to “active”; the route always goes via pause. Whether the same applies to campaigns and ad groups we have not tested; this article is limited to ads.
How to bring an ad back
- In Chatvertise: filter the ads list by status “archived”, press the pause button on the ad. It's enabled for archived objects for this purpose and is labelled “Restore from archive”.
- The ad is then paused. Check headline, text, image and destination URL, then activate.
- Several ads: the bulk action “Pause” on a filtered selection of archived ads brings them all back.
What the history contributes
The real question after a mishap is: which ads were active before and which were paused? The change log answers that: every archive entry carries the status before the change. You filter the history to “archived” in the period in question, read off the previous status per ad and restore it: pause for all, activate only for those that were active. That's exactly how we brought our 20 ads back within minutes.
Why a restored ad doesn't serve immediately
After restoring, the ad is “paused” and carries the serving issue ad_not_active. That's correct, not an error. It disappears only after activating; if another issue remains afterwards, Why isn't my ad serving? and the list of all serving codes explain it.
When archiving is still the right call
- Seasonal items after the season: the ad clears the list and can be restored next year instead of being rebuilt.
- Superseded variants after a test: the winner stays active, the loser goes to the archive instead of filling the list.
- Don't archive ads that should only rest temporarily; that's what “paused” is for.
And because the archive is reversible, we changed the label of the archive button in Chatvertise: it no longer says “permanent”. All of the month's changes are in the late-October update.
Frequently asked questions
- Is an archived ad deleted?
- No. Archiving stops delivery and marks the ad as put away; it stays retrievable with all its fields and can be brought back by pausing.
- Can I activate an archived ad directly?
- No. The route always goes via “paused”: pause first, then activate.
- Does this apply to campaigns and ad groups too?
- We haven't verified that. Chatvertise offers the pause button there as well; if the API rejects the action, the error message appears directly on the object.
