ChatGPT ads vs. Google Ads: the key differences
ChatGPT advertising and Google Ads look similar at first glance: someone expresses a need, an ad responds to it. But the two channels reach people at very different points, with different formats, different targeting and different measurement. If you're splitting budget between the two, you should know these differences — here are the six that matter most.
1. Where the ad appears
Google shows ads above and beside a results list; the user scans ten blue links and decides where to click. ChatGPT embeds the ad directly in the answer — as a chat card or product card at the moment the user has asked a question and expects a recommendation. There's no fight for position one against nine organic results. In return, the ad has to fit the conversation, otherwise it feels like a foreign object.

2. Search intent vs. consultation
On Google, someone types two to four words: “men's running shoes size 10”. In ChatGPT the same person describes their problem in full sentences, often with context about budget, situation and preferences. That allows ads that feel like advice — and it means the ChatGPT user is often earlier in the decision process. What that means for product choice and copy is in our article on consultative products in ChatGPT.
3. Targeting: keywords vs. context
Google Ads lives on keywords, match types and negative keywords. There are no keywords in ChatGPT Ads: you steer via country, platform (web, iOS, Android) and audiences, and the system matches your ad to fitting conversations — based on title, copy and product data. That's less fine-grained control, but also less maintenance. The quality of your ad copy and product feed takes the role the keyword list plays on Google.
4. Creative formats
Instead of text lines with headline and description, in ChatGPT you use chat cards with title, copy, image, optional price and destination URL — or product ads from your feed, where ChatGPT picks the fitting product per conversation, individually or as a carousel. Feed campaigns make entire catalogs servable without building a creative for every product.
5. Costs and bidding
Both channels run auctions. On Google you choose between many automated bidding strategies; in ChatGPT Ads you set a max bid per ad group and decide per campaign whether to bill per click or per impression — a decision that's immutable afterwards. What the max bid means exactly is in our bidding article. Because the channel is young, auctions in many categories are still far less contested than on Google.
6. Measurement and attribution
Google brings its own ecosystem: Analytics, Tag Manager, conversion tracking. In ChatGPT Ads you report conversions via a pixel or server-side — for Shopify in Chatvertise without code — and choose attribution windows of 7, 14 or 30 days. For channel comparisons you should align window and time basis; how to do that is in the article on cross-channel attribution.

Which channel when
- Google Ads: established products with high search volume, clear keywords, users close to purchase.
- ChatGPT Ads: consultative products, early research phase, new audiences, categories with little competition in the auction.
- Both together: Google catches formed purchase intent, ChatGPT shapes it — measured with the same attribution window.
When each channel kicks in
- Need
- Research
- Compare
- Purchase
early phase: question, advice, product choice
late phase: clear keyword, close to purchase
They overlap at the comparison stage: measure both channels with the same attribution window.
To get started we recommend a small test budget with click billing, two or three ad variants and conversion tracking from day one. After two weeks, compare cost per conversion with Google — not clicks, not CTR. Chatvertise specializes in ChatGPT ads, including AI copilot, Shopify import and automation rules; here's how to start.
